THE DREAM OF NEMO

Nemo’s mom tries to fill the void in her stomach with a pregnancy, but is diagnosed with abortus habitualis - recurrent miscarriage. Though everything looks bleak, it takes more than a diagnosis to lose hope and she fills her dresser with knitted baby projects and used pregnancy tests. Nemo’s dad stands on the sideline, and the couple finds it difficult to share their grief with each other and those closest to them. Because what is it, really, that one loses when they lose a pregnancy?

The Dream of Nemo is a story about grief, involuntary childlessness, identity, and hope. A personal 60-minute monologue that bridges theatre and classical music. Helene Madsen Smed’s performance is accompanied by string pieces by composer Antonio Daprile. Through intimate and aesthetically crafted staging, the audience gains a rare insight into what life looks like with habitual miscarriage, infertility and childlessness, told from Helene’s own experiences. Although fertility treatments have become more normalized, miscarriage remains one of the last great taboos on the topic. The Dream of Nemo searches to break this silence and invite reflection and dialogue.

Every 4th pregnancy ends in miscarriage.

“You are placed on my chest and you subtly find peace. Your father and I look into each other’s tearful eyes, and we are… happy. Finally complete. We are your parents and we love you no matter what. That is what we lost. Not the fetus we donated to research, but you…
the dream of Nemo.”
